Recognition Process Guide

Guide to Degree Equivalency in Germany (ZAB)

If you’re planning to immigrate, work, or study in Germany, your academic degree may need to be officially recognized by the ZAB (Central Office for Foreign Education). Here’s a complete step-by-step guide to help you go through the process on your own.

The ZAB (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen) is the official authority responsible for evaluating foreign higher education degrees in Germany. Recognition from ZAB can help with:

  • Getting a Blue Card EU
  • Public sector jobs in Germany
  • Proving your qualification level for further education or work

1. Check Your University and Degree in anabin

Before applying, go to the anabin database:

Look for:

  • Your university status (should be H+)
  • Your degree program recognized in the list

If both are valid, you can proceed with the official evaluation.

As of February 2024, the entire process is handled digitally via the ZAB portal.
You’ll need to create a BUND-ID account to start your application.

Usually required:

  • Original university diploma
  • Official transcripts
  • Certified translations of all documents
  • Passport or national ID
  • Completed online application form

If available, include your Diploma Supplement.

4. Pay the Application Fee

Fees (as of 2025):

  • €200 for the main application
  • €100 for additional or replacement copies

Payment is done via bank transfer.

5. Submit Documents (if needed)

Most of the time, digital uploads are enough.
In some cases, physical copies might still be requested.

6. Receive Your Evaluation (Zeugnisbewertung)

The final certificate includes:

  • The academic level of your degree
  • Program length
  • German equivalency level (e.g., “equivalent to a Bachelor’s in Germany”)
  • Eligibility for jobs, immigration, or further education

🕒 Processing time: approx. 6–12 weeks

  • Only use certified translations of your documents
  • Double-check spelling and codes in anabin
  • Always keep digital copies of your uploads
